About Mama J's Cabin
Jeanette Cobb, affectionately known to her grandchildren, children, family, and
friends as Mama J, is the proud owner of Mama J's Cabin. Born and raised on a
rice and cotton farm in Arkansas, Mama J's roots were firmly planted in Southern
hospitality. For many years Mama J worked in the fashion industry owning and
operating her own line of dress shops in Arkansas. In 1987 Mama J moved to Giles
County, Tennessee and opened a chain of discount fashion shops. In 1994, Mama J
bought the old Powderhorn Campground. The cabin had been used as an office, meeting
room, and recreation area for campers. After making improvements to the inside of
the cabin, Mama J was ready to open her gift shop. With the enthusiasm and energy
of a teenager, Mama J opens the cabin every day with a smile as warm as the Southern
sun. You'll immediately feel "right at home" upon entering the cabin.
The cabin itself is steeped in history. Composed of two cabins, each originally a
family home, Mama J's Cabin takes you back to a simpler time in history. The east
cabin was originally built in Lynnville, Tennessee, just north of Pulaski, in about
1845 and was 18'x16' in size. The west cabin was built about the same time in Elkton,
Tennessee, southeast of Pulaski, and was 18'x18' in size. The two homes were moved to
their present location and reassembled between 1968- 1970. Separated, a common roof
was built over the two cabins to form a "dogtrot", which was typical of homes from
this period. In 1975 the dogtrot was enclosed to form a central room. The cabin today
is listed in the State Heritage Trail Catalog. Mama J's Cabin has been visited by tourists
from every state, as well as over 30 foreign countries. Make your plans to visit Mama
J's Cabin soon. Come with a smile, leave with a memory!
